    November 27th, 2006 under performances. [ Comments: none ]

David Seatter, the director of the Shaw Project, asked me to do a few small parts in a staged reading of the W. S. Gilbert Play, The Realm of Joy. I’d worked with the Shaw Project once before, with Waltz Dream. I’ll link it when there’s something to link. Joy was part of an evening of Gilbert farces, including A Medical Man and A Colossal Idea. This took place November 27 and 28 in the Ellington Room of Manhattan Plaza.
    Our program:

I played the Assistant Stage Manager and a man named Jopp. The latter had a silly little side-plot where he and his friend Quisby were trying to pick up two young ladies who were at the theater with their parents; unfortunately, the resolution didn’t make it into our version, because we were busy playing other roles at the point where Quisby and Jopp were eventually to succeed.

Here’s the Realm of Joy Page on the Gilbert & Sullivan Archive. Unfortunately, the script is not, as far as I know, available online. It’s a cute little piece. I got to work with some fun and talented people, and although my roles were small, I did find a lot of fun in them.

    Opera Delaware Carmen
    November 5th, 2006 under audience. [ Comments: 1 ]

My close friend Emily Senturia was the assistant conductor for Opera Delaware’s production of Carmen. I went to see it November 4. It was my first Carmen, and I absolutely loved it. What a wonderful opera. If I ever do start performing opera material, I would love to play Escamillo someday. For the most part, the whole group was excellent. The particular stand-out for me was Gustavo Lopez Manitti as Don Jose. He was absolutely phenomenal. In a much smaller role, Erika Person did stand out as Mercedes, too. I saw her the following January as Phoebe in Yeomen of the Guard. There did seem to be something of a weak link in Kimberly Doucette’s Frasquita; perhaps she was having an off night. Here are some key bits of the program:
